You guys! I am SO EXCITED to share Ruby and Harold’s 65 YEAR anniversary session with you! Five years ago, I had the complete honor of documenting their 60th wedding anniversary. And now 5 years later, I got to see them again! I had emailed Cindy, one of their children, and together we planned another shoot with them.
Harold is the exact same as I remember him. Cutting jokes and always smiling. Sadly, Ruby’s dementia has worsened. She didn’t remember me or the last time we took pictures together. When she greeted me at the door, she wrapped me up in a tight hug… just like you would hug family you hadn’t seen in a long time. I told her I was so excited to see her and she said, ‘Well, I wish I knew why!’ But wow, her personality was just as sassy as ever!! I brought her cookies from Mookies. Her face lit up and she said, ‘Are these all for me?’ I said yes and she said, ‘Well, bye bye family!!’ She went back inside and wrote her name on the box. It’s so sad to know that she won’t remember me, her cookies or the wonderful time we had together. But she’ll enjoy looking at the pictures and that’s exactly why I do what I do. They still have a large framed print hanging in their home from our last session together.
1952. On their wedding day.
He was so proud of his suit. He bragged about how he found it at a second hand store for less than $15. The coat was about 3 sizes too big, but Harold is so handsome that you can’t even tell. His bowtie has been in his wardrobe for over 65 years!
I told him those flowers were for Ruby.
She was excited.
I said, ‘Ok, Ruby! I want you to give him a kiss!’ And she goes, ‘Ooooooh! Haven’t I kissed him enough?’ She is hilarious!!
One of my favorite shots! How long these hands have held each other!
Despite her dementia, she recognizes Harold and loves him more and more each day. You can see it in her eyes.
Look how proud he is!!
Doing their favorite thing in the world together. Ruby very clearly read her favorite verse to me without skipping a beat. From the King James version, Psalm 100: 1-5: “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”
